Hello Pixies and Unicorns!

Summer 1

This half term we are learning about growing. Below are several of the highlights that we will be doing in our curriculum.

English

We will be looking at non fiction/information books and writing simple sentences and captions. We are also focusing on fictional books, thinking about the beginning, middle and end of a story and having a go at writing our own stories based on the Enormous Carrot and Super Tato.

Phonics

Through guided reading sessions the children will be beginning to use their sounds to read simple words then simple sentences. We have now learnt Phase 3 sounds from 'Letters and Sounds' and the children are now applying the Phase 2 and Phase 3 sounds their writing.

Funky Fingers

Every day we will be doing funky finger where your child will be working on the handwriting patterns at the appropriate level for them. If your child is working on a sturdy pencil grip they will be producing patterns on a larger scale to continue developing their core strength and gross motor strength. If your child has already developed a robust pencil grip they will now be working on a smaller scale to develop their fine motor skills.

We are learning about growing and planting, we will be visiting Hilliers and basing some art work on this trip. We will also be looking at eco systems in a pond and pond dipping and colours within nature.

In ICT we are starting to use talking pegs, taking simple pictures with an Ipad, moving beebots (programmable toys)

We have linked sharing fairly in maths to sharing fairly within the class (PSED)

Pirates!

This half term we are learning about pirates. Below are several of the highlights that we will be doing in our curriculum.

We are also focusing on fictional books, thinking about the beginning, middle and end of a story and having a go at writing our own adventure stories. We are using picture prompts and story cubes to encourage the children's ideas of a character, setting and a problem to be solved.

Mental Maths

This half term we are focusing on teen numbers and what each number really means. For example, 11 is made up of  10 and a 1 rather than a 1 and a 1. We are encouraging the children to accurately count physical objects to a total of 20 and order teen numbers to 20.

The following website, Snappy Maths, helps the children to partition and write their teen numbers.

Play the following game with your child to develop mental recall of numbers to 20.

Understanding the World

We are learning about pirates, pirate ships and adventures! We have dressed up as pirates and used props to explore the language used by pirates, for example they didn't have swords, they had cutlasses. We have been using the internet to explore several of the ships docked at Portsmouth Harbour, in particular, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory. The children have been very interested in how different people were treated. The captain had his own quarters, and the sailors had to eat, sleep and work around the cannons.
