Science Curriculum Intent

Our science curriculum aims to excite and inspire pupils to make discoveries about the natural and humanly constructed world around them. At Sun Hill we believe that children learn best when they are actively involved in their learning and have made independent decisions about how to answer an enquiry question. Therefore, where possible, science is taught through the use of first-hand practical experiences. A topic based approach enables us to structure the science learning around a hook or question from which we can derive simple comparative tests which develop understanding of a scientific idea or concept. Whilst some investigations are lesson based and the children are encouraged to notice immediate changes, others take place over a longer time period where the children are taught to notice patterns which emerge gradually. Science is all around us and as a school we strive to make the curriculum purposeful and make links the other subjects taught such as maths to help us to record and history and geography to create hooks.
